Honda Cars PH bags triple platinum for outstanding CSR in the 6th SPMJ “Driven to Serve” Awards

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) received three platinum awards from the 6th Driven to Serve Awards of the Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists (SPMJ) for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. These projects are related to road safety, environment protection and education.

HCPI’s recognition in the 6th Driven to Serve awards are for the following projects:

  • Teen Smart with Honda SENSING Demonstration for Students – Platinum Award
  • Recycling of Used Lead Acid Batteries and Industrial Oil - Platinum Award
  • Innovation Contest for Senior High School Students in the Philippines - Platinum Award

Teen Smart with Honda SENSING Demonstration for Students

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) sustains efforts to promote road safety, through interactive learning sessions for college students, recently in partnership with an international organization of student youth leaders, AIESEC Philippines (AIESEC). The training program includes classroom instruction on safe driving behavior, reinforced with a guided experiential drive of Honda SENSING–equipped models such as the All-New BR-V, Civic and HR-V.

In pursuit of Honda’s global target of zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050, HCPI organizes educational programs on road safety for its different stakeholders such as the youth, through Teen Smart that started in 2004. To strengthen their consciousness and appreciation for road safety, the learning sessions were improved with the addition of Honda SENSING demonstration to better understand how technology is applied in protecting the safety of drivers, passengers, as well as pedestrians, and other road users. Honda has been reinforcing its vehicles with the Honda SENSING suite of safety features to realize the vision of “Safety for Everyone.”

Recycling of Used Lead Acid Batteries and Industrial Oil (Bantay Baterya and Bantay Langis)

Aiming to reduce resource consumption and pollution through the proper disposal of hazardous lead-acid batteries and used oils, HCPI in 2006 inked a partnership program with ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation and Oriental - Motolite Marketing Corporation. The recycling effort later expanded to other stakeholders such as Associates, dealers, suppliers, and customers as it strives to cultivate a mindset of environmental protection.

Since the program started, approximately 110,000 kg of used lead acid batteries and 10,000 liters of used oils have been collected and recycled. Aside from conserving resources, landfill space and energy, and avoiding further land and water contamination, the funds generated from the recycling effort are used in supporting various environmental projects of Bantay Kalikasan such as the protection and preservation La Mesa Watershed and maintenance of La Mesa Eco Park.

Innovation Contest for Senior High School Students in the Philippines

HCPI partnered with the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) in an innovation competition for young Filipinos in Senior High School. The program imake.wemake:create.innovate.collaborate fosters creative, innovative and collaborative mindsets among students by enabling them to solve problems of their respective communities or achieve a particular purpose using critical thinking, experimentation, risk analysis, engineering, and technical skills.

The most recent competition gathered a total of 89 project proposals from public and private high schools all over the Philippines, the biggest number of proposals received since the program started in 2017. The teams composed of students and teacher-coach dedicated 90 days to designing, building, and testing their project prototypes. Projects are in the areas of food safety, security, traffic / road congestion, health, education, disaster mitigation, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and environment, among others. Three schools, chosen by a distinguished Board of Judges, each received the Youth Innovation Award at the Final Presentation and Awarding Ceremony held on July 27-28, 2023 at Crimson Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

“We extend our gratitude to the SPMJ committee – led by Mr. Ray Butch Gamboa, for recognizing Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. Corporate activities such as these initiatives are as important as product initiatives. We are thankful for these accolades that help us reach more people so that our road safety, education, and environment activities will generate more meaningful impact with more people and organizations on board. We believe in collective effort and shared responsibility which are among the reasons why we are also very grateful for our program partners who share our objectives and who have been so dedicated and passionate in pursuing them year after year," said Ms. Rie Miyake, HCPI President.
